The Dutch Army has received the first units of its new 81mm mortars, marking a significant step in modernizing its arsenal.
The Dutch Ministry of Defense confirmed that the old mortar systems, which no longer meet operational range and accuracy requirements, will be gradually replaced.

The new mortars were acquired to address the shortcomings of previous models, which were no longer effective in terms of range and deployment speed. According to the Ministry of Defense, these new systems can hit targets at a distance of at least 6,000 meters, providing greater firepower and tactical efficiency on the battlefield.
“What’s new about these mortars? The new mortars can shoot farther and with greater precision, and they can be deployed more quickly,” the Dutch Ministry of Defense stated.
Modernized Equipment and Transport
The modernization plan includes the acquisition of more than 120 new 81mm mortars, along with the renewal of ammunition and the logistical support necessary for their full operation. The Dutch Armed Forces will have access to five different types of ammunition for these mortars, allowing for greater flexibility in military operations.
The Marine Corps will use the mortars from Bandvagn 206 tracked vehicles, while ground forces will transport the systems and ammunition using Fennek or Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
Possible Shipment to Ukraine
There is a possibility that the decommissioned mortars will be donated to the Ukrainian Armed Forces as part of the new military aid packages provided by the Netherlands. The country has been one of Ukraine’s main allies in supplying weapons and logistical support since the beginning of the conflict in the region.
